SEO Mistakes to Avoid

SEO is a great way to get traffic. However, some mistakes of SEO may lower your rankings.  Let’s see these mistakes to increase our SEO performance.

Low Speed

If your pages take long time to load, it is very difficult to be listed at high rankings. The reason for speed problems to occur may be the website platform, a large content (especially unoptimized images) or insufficient hosting. You need to solve these problems first.

Using Outdated SEO Practices

SEO is constantly changing. Old SEO practices may lower your performance. For example, meta keyword optimization was important in the past, but today Google just ignores it. Always make sure that your techniques are up to date.

Focusing Too Much on SEO

Funny, but true! Focusing too much on SEO can lead to “over-optimization.” For example, a website owner can ignore social media content planning.

Technical SEO Problems

Not having a proper sitemap, not using meta titles and descriptions, and not making an optimization for categorizing may lower your SEO performance. Try to check your technical SEO performance.

Insufficient or Irregular Content

Content is a vital element for SEO. Try to create quality, detailed and useful content. Publishing content irregularly is confusing for users and search engines. Try to post your contents regularly.

Ignoring Social Media

Social media is a great reference for search engines. Search engines can easily detect inactive social media pages, so you should give some effort for social media too.

Poor Design and UI

Yes, search engines cannot see your fancy website design, but users can! A poorly designed website may cause users to leave your website early. This is a bad signal for search engines! Also, search engines practice manual review sometimes, in this case your website will have a bad image.

Excessive or Poor Branding

Users can find web sites with non-brand search queries. A landing page should be enough to satisfy the user and tell about the brand. With a poor branding, the user will get the information, but forget about the website. If your branding is aggressive, the user might say “This page is full of self-bragging, I do not think there is a useful info here” and click the exit button.

Ignoring Conversion Optimization

Now that SEO is bringing the user, what is next? If the landing page is full of text (it is mostly added for SEO purposes) conversion rate will be low. It also means that SEO efforts are not effective for increasing sales. Try to find the balance and think about the users first.

Providing Poor Customer Service

Even if it seems like a non-SEO topic, it is correct! Poor customer service may lead to unhappy customers, and unhappy customers will write bad reviews. Reviews and scores are important for search engines, too. Providing perfect customer service will increase your customer lifetime values and SEO performance.

Too Many Ads

For publishers’ sites; users frequently complain about content blocking and distracting ads. Posting too many ads has a negative effect on the design and loading speed of your websites.

Not Doing Something New

Search engines want to index the new content. Be creative and try to make a difference. New things attract users.

Not Having “About Us” or Contact Pages

Both search engines and users request these pages. These are widely used standards. Optimizing and making these pages attractive is an advantage.

Not Using Any Analytics Tools

Web site analytics tools (like Google Analytics) grants you a great knowledge about the performance of your websites. You should check your traffic regularly. It is also necessary to be able to troubleshoot the problems on your websites quickly.

Not Using Structured Data or Other Advantageous Features

Google provides great features; if your website’s position fits, why not use these? For example, structured data will make your website stand out in search results. Structured data can be used for a lot of content types such as articles, events and fact checks.

Note: ???Some users not tell to use structured data consciously because of it is lowering CTRs.??? We respect it. It can change every industry, content type or website. You got the point; look for new features, check them if it fits your site, test carefully and use it.

Not Optimizing for Mobile

Desktop PC’s has a fast internet connection but smartphones with data packages not fast as PC’s. Also, infographics, detailed images could be troublesome for mobile users. Optimizing website for mobile is vital for SEO performance.

Applying Same Techniques to Every Industry

SEO is not a “one size fits all” thing. SEO tasks change according to the types and goals of your website. Content, e-commerce, local or international websites… They all need different processes each.

Wrong Backlink Strategy

Google clearly forbids buying backlinks. Paid backlinks are easily detected by Google and penalize sites. Do not pay people for backlinks. Create quality content and give them a reason to stay in your website. Unfortunately, it is difficult.

Being Ungenerous About Giving a Link

Web site owners should be careful about linking. Linking a poor web site (without any proper tagging) may have a bad affect. Yet, linking is not a bad thing. Actually, linking is the meaning of “web!” Especially content publisher web sites create lists like “Top 10 budget friendly laptops in 2019,” in this case, shopping links (if affiliate, it should be declared clearly) can be helpful for the user. It makes user experience better. For example; if a new social media platform publishes and creates an article about it, users in the platform will become curious about your website. Giving a link may be useful for users.

Not Using Proper Link Tagging

Linking some website is similar to telling the search engine that “I recommend this site.” Correct link tagging is vital for SEO. “Sponsored” tag is used for paid links and placements. “UGC” stands for User Generated Contents which are forums or comment sections. “Nofollow” is like telling Google not to relate this site with mine.
Using these tags are easy, but using certain tags for specific areas requires technical knowledge. For example, you may want to add UGC to all links on comments, but it depends on your website platforms, which is an easy task for a developer.
